Raising a Sensory Smart Child provides an indepth and comprehensive guide to almost all aspects of raising a child with sensory integration issues. It provides a good basic overview of sensory integration topics such as what sensory integration is, what it feels like, how it manifests, causes, possible diagnosis, and treatment. However, the real strength of this book is that it goes beyond these topics to focus on raising a child with sensory integration issues. Even if you have read one or two other books on sensory integration you will find this book helpful. It delves into topics that parents care about like self-care (such as dressing, tooth brushing, and eating) and socializing (such as parties, crowds, noise), providing suggestions for making these situations easier. Parents will find a number of great resources here including a sensory integration checklist, camps, and suggestions for therapists and teachers. Many other important aspects of parenting a child with sensory integration are addressed, such as coping with tantrums, rigidity, and overload. Ways for parents to advocate for their child at school and in the community are also addressed, as well as ways to help their children function at their best. Their advice is both practical and helpful for children of all ages, from preschool to teenage, who suffer from sensory integration disorder. I would recommend this book to any parent who has a child with any level of sensory integration problems, but especially to those whose children are struggling in their daily lives.
